The little mermaid costume is a lot like the holy grail of Halloween outfits. Even without the blockbuster Walt disney flick and Ariel’s winning character (the main character in the feature), a large number of young ladies have fantasized about transforming into a sea maiden.

Once you add the magical world created through the film, the love of a fine royal prince, along with the friendship of adorable and memorable characters like Sebastian the crab and additionally Flounder the fish, it helps make the wish to step into that role much more profound. Now top that off with the fact that Ariel is in fact a mermaid princess and you have the role of a lifetime – the role of each and every girl’s dreams.

Ariel is the spectacular, gifted and strong willed little girl of King Triton, Ruler of the Sea. In the original Walt disney film she actually is 16 years of age and yearning to explore the world of humankind. When she happens to save Eric, a good looking young prince from drowning, she is a lot more motivated to walk among the humans and join him on land.

The villain from the story, Ursula, uses this desire to lure Ariel directly into her evil plan. She transforms Ariel’s fin into legs (in return for Ariel’s voice) and allows her about three days to make the prince fall in love with her. If the prince has not kissed her by sundown on the 3rd day, then Ariel’s soul is going to be Ursula’s permanently.

Although the prince really does fall in love with Ariel, Ursula employs her magic to make certain that the kiss does not happen and begins to take Ariel’s soul. Her father steps in to save her and offers his own soul instead. Ursula’s plan to become the leader of the underworld is complete – however she doesn’t count on the spunk from the little mermaid.

With the help of her friends and Eric, Ariel beats Ursula and restores the souls of all the merpeople who have been trapped under Ursula’s spell. Her dad realizes that Ariel is old enough and sensible enough to make her own decisions and allows her to settle on land and marry Eric.

The first movie had been such a runaway success, and the persona was so refreshing, that a whole franchise was born around Ariel. Various other movies were made of Ariel’s adventures and that of her daughter, another mermaid little princess. There are also TV shows which depicted Ariel’s tween years and her ventures under the sea.

Little girls could not get enough of the mermaid princess and devour just about every new adventure. Though the first film came out in 1989, even today, over twenty years and counting, the character resonates with young girls just about everywhere and the little mermaid costume is very popular.

Ariel isn’t just a mermaid but a spirited adventurer with a heart of gold that is always prepared to help out her friends and correct any wrongs she sees. Regardless of her age, or what her storyline, Ariel is her own person, an independent thinker who decides her own fate, rather than waiting passively for others to do it for her. She is not only the embodiment of every girl’s fantasy, she is a perfect role model for strong young women everywhere.

The little mermaid costume enables girls to not just become a mermaid princess but to embody the character of one of the bravest and most interesting female characters ever written for children.
